The purpose of this site is to think through what’s going on in the claiming and crafting of children and narratives of childhood particularly in Black American literature.   This is a big question, and I am trying to use this blog to break down and elucidate what’s at stake in this question: the historical narratives that make it possible, and the possibilities it might force us to consider about notions of growth, movement, machines, and progress.   I am an English PhD candidate at Duke, and this is a dissertation blog, which is to say while I’d prefer you not totally steal my ideas,  all of the ideas here are works in progress.  Feel free to comment and make suggestions.  Thanks so much for reading my rambles (and that is mostly what they are!)
