George Alexander had a pigmentation disease, for which he was known as the spotted boy and ‘a fanciful child of nature formed in her most playful mood’. Born the son of African slaves in the Caribbean, he was eventually given over to a travelling theater where he was exhibted publically and privately unitl he died in February 1813.
A marble of brown and white ... a marvel of a creature .... what makes a good spectacle? is it the mixing into one body? the splotches of white? or the always present thought that perhaps the splotches are black and the body white? there are many uncanny narratives about George Alexander's body, his delicateness, his public and private show. In this blog, I am concerned with the everyday-ness of Alexander's body, of fascinating little monsters, the always already connection between (soon to be white) child nature's primitive (so very black in her play).
